Today we introduce a very special guest post from the authority on dark, alternative and latex fashion – Stylenoir Magazine‘s Editor James Mills.  We were delighted when he chose the sublime Atsuko Kuko for his article and be sure to check out our piece for him on Aoi Kotsuhiroi.

Born in Japan and trained in Tokyo, Atsuko Kudo is the fashion worldʼs favourite latex designer. Her pieces have graced everything from Vogue covers across the globe, to Lady Gagaʼs extravagant visions.

Her latest to hit the catwalk comes in the form of the lingerie Spring Summer 2011 New York collection.

The whole collection has a sense of sophistication about it, a certain debonair as such. The cut and innovation of the fabric maintains a provocative yet graceful silhouette, a feminine shape that is sleek and sultry yet still achingly chic.

Atsuko Kudoʼs signature patterned latex is prominent as ever. Floral and subtle animal prints accentuate the delicacy of the collection. A technique that is still remarkably difficult to create with latex, yet Atsuko Kudo achieves this faultlessly in every respect. The pink Chantilly lace print especially caught our eye, combining something envisaging fragility with the toughness of latex.

The tempting, enticing translucent pleated dress and skin tight high-waisted girdles that hit the catwalk were complimented by perfectly formed stockings and beautifully tailored gloves. A certain class and excellence is definitely present with that all important high fashion flavour.

The millinery in this collection really stands out. From the elegance of the wide brimmed hat and the oriental influences of the pleated applique detail headwear. The Alejandra hat is a favourite of ours, a piece that Georgia Frost recently wore in the most dignified latex photoshoot we have ever seen.

When it comes to latex design, Atsuko Kudo is in a league of her own. There is no doubt why the global fashion pack are always pursuing her incredible design, and why she even designed for the Thierry Mugler Autumn Winter 11 collection this season.

Amazing work. Seriously. Classic, not too raunchy, just the right amount of elegance and (for lack of a better word) lust. Keep more of this coming!

  2. Tokyo Telephone says:

I know what you mean, it has an inherent sexuality that is sufficiently engaging without feeling “pervy”.

  3. Colin says:

Don’t forget that this collection was shown in support of Seven Bar Foundation, a non-profit that makes micro-loans to women, as part of Lingerie New York 2010. See Atsuko’s full show at
