Something a bit different today courtesy of Egg Magazine favorite Teramoto, who has dipped his toe in the fashion world to produce the all new Acid Rock inspired ALTER VENOMV (and yes it is always written in capitals). The look is…. an acquired taste to say the least, but not without redemption, behold!
If this had been from any other Harajuku darling I probably wouldn’t have batted one of my unusually long eyelashes, but given that this is a brand that has been doing the rounds in the aforementioned mainstream friendly Men’s Egg with the potential to go big, I think it deserves our attention.
To me it is a brand that the 109-2 Buzz Spunky or CocoLuLu crowd can graduate into when they want a darker more adult look, but without the losing their stylistic “spunk”! The brand borrows heavily from the Harajuku/Omotesando Hair Salon look with lots of very tight layers balanced out with excessive padding and bulk elsewhere in the outfit, but what brings it right back to a more Gyaru-O image are the fitted parkers, knitted hats and artificially ripped jeans. In short this is a brand that stands (in a very odd way if the models above are anything to go by) as a halfway between Shibuya and Harajuku street styles and in that sense it works. More importantly it brings a look that was pretty much limited to a couple of kilometers of Harajuku to every magazine stand and convenience store in Japan.
Personally, I really like the use of dark purples and on the edge of neon tones that alone would be the statement piece in even a fairly edgy outfit. Also the slightly sinister prints – like the eye above – do lend a certain seriousness to what would otherwise be a bit of an “out-there” ensemble. So for me I could only conceive of wearing a single layer at a time from ALTER VENOMV. A complete outfit is just a bit too much and I worry that I would end up way beyond the goal of eerily cool and into the realms of just plain creepy. Still, I am all for the acid rock look as a replacement for the overdone surfer rut that Egg has long got itself into.
But if you reckon you could work this look, well more power to you. If the push that this brand is getting is succesful, you most certainly will not be alone…
