In honour of my new contact lenses (and new-found ability to see without glasses!), I thought I’d talk a little bit about contact lenses in Japan.
Fashion contact lenses in Japan are big business – I suppose that if you’re bleaching your hair and lightening your skin, you might as well change your eye colour too! It also works in reverse; increasing numbers of Western Japanese fashion fans are turning to darker coloured lenses, so now you have some kind of amazing/terrifying circle where Japanese girls try to look more like Western girls, who try to look more Japanese, who try to look more Western… I must confess that I kind of love the way everyone influences everyone else!
I think my favourites have to be the grey lenses – mostly so I could trot around feeling like I should be the subject of a Smashing Pumpkins song! (Ah, I can dream…)
Popular with gyaru and now commonly seen in lolita too, cosmetic contact lenses are a great way to change your eye colour and really get that wide-eyed doe look. These days, you can’t open a fashion magazine without seeing the vast majority of the models wearing coloured contacts – I always enjoy spotting the odd drifting lens!
If you’d like to try out coloured contact lenses (and have suitable eyes to do so!), I’d suggest checking out Don Quixote, where a set of one month lenses should set you back no more than 3000yen (£21/£31).
