Samuel has already waxed lyrical about Makin Jan Ma, and now I’m happy to do the same! Of course I’m not adverse to a bit of wardrobe crossover (oh, the joys of delving into the other gender’s closet!), but sometimes it’s just nice to have a bit of womenswear to get your teeth into.
Makin Jan Ma is know for creating fashion collections based on characters, which is a really fantastically interesting way of designing. I’m sure Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons would have something to say about it… but I love the idea of creating a character and concentrating on what they’d wear, their personal taste and how they’d style items. It’s made me think a little more about the way I dress, and I think I do pick clothes based on what image I’m trying to portray as much as just what appeals to me. Case in point: I’m currently into a kind of spooky-schoolboy look, with blazers and chelsea boots and big glasses and bow-ties and collars and lots of black. The Rebecca Schoolboy character is one that I’ve created in my own head, it’s something I’m developing and defining, and I wonder how similar this process is to some aspects of Japanese fashion and even movements like seapunk and witch house.
Anyway, dragging myself away from self reflection: this collection from Makin Jan Ma has been produced in conjunction with ABC>’s Leo Ku, and I’ve got to say that Alice Wild seems pretty damn cool. Probably the kind of girl I’d be a bit scared of in real life, but she’s most likely got a successful blog and likes taking photos of shoes and cats and drunk people (isn’t that truly what blog are for?!). In terms of actual clothing, I’d love to have a rummage in Alice Wild’s wardrobe! Plenty of bold colour (check out that red, woah!), leopard print, spikes and sheer fabric. I’m particularly taken by the long layers of sheerness and square & circle patterns that just on the edgy side of something approaching blogger-chic. I could see many of these items making their way into closets across the world, and I think Alice Wild herself would approve!
