Mind Your Own Business or M.Y.O.B is a tattooed middle-finger toting brand from two Osaka natives who cut their teeth in the Brooklyn street fashion scene before bringing that energy back to Japan. Currently they are spending time in Tokyo touring a series of exhibitions that spans the A-Z of the Tokyo underground, from the Kitakore building in Koenji, through to DOG Harajuku and on to Candy in Fake Tokyo, Shibuya. With that said you should know what to expect, in your face and excess taken to the nth degree, but crucially the authenticity and credibility that comes with actually living the lifestyle rather than the club kid tourists who shop the wave of Boy London fakes currently sweeping Tokyo.
We caught up with the design team behind the brand, Comi and Tanimi, at their exhibition in the Garter Gallery of the Kitakore building where they were also showcasing some collaborations with designers from Kitakore exclusive to this pop-up as well some items produced with MEGA.DOPE.POP. The overall vibe is pretty much in line with what you might expect from Candy, but you have to remember these girls were one of the first to really get this look popular before the world and his wife caught on thanks to Tumblr and the likes of 2NE1 wearing it (they do wear real MYOB for the record).
One half of the design team showing that a little bit of restraint is the best way to get the most out of the look – but as I always say, all things are relative.
Comi does actually have this exact tattoo on her finger.
Personally I like the “HYPE” items produced with Kitakore regular Banzai – this whole genre of fashion fell into self-parody such a long time ago I am not quite sure how many levels deep the irony goes.
The hats and the caps with lettering have been probably the biggest Tokyo street trend of the last 6 months, but MYOB just takes them to that next level in terms of detail and the price is actually really in line with the imitators – I urge as ever to choose the real deal.
For more on MYOB you can head here and they do offer international shipping if you are so inclined, if not, well, you know what to do.
