So – who wants some colour? As always, I feel like there’s an out-of-sync feeling feeling between fashion season and the reality of the current weather, and as I’m excitedly pawing through the autumn winter 2012 Paris collections, here in Japan fashion is gearing up for spring and summer. I can’t wait to start taking ridiculous photos in cherry blossom season, but I will miss crazy amounts of layering when the temperature starts to heat up.
Talking of all things hot hot hot, here’s RBT X CO! Having been on the scene for three years now, and currently stocked in Chelsea at La Foret in Harajuku, this Osaka-based brand is rapidly gaining the recognition it deserves. Taking all the best bits of Japanese street fashion and trends and putting them through a more refined lens, RBT x CO manages to make fresh and fun clothing that appeals to a wide audience – I can see everyone from menswear junkies to club kids itching to get their hands on more than a few of these items.
From the current collection, I’m a huge fan of the paisley patterns, cartoon-printed fabric details and great little accessories. We were lucky enough to get the chance to see a preview at the roomsLINK exhibition, and I can say in that in person, no matter how cute and bold it looks, the quality is all there too: for example, the really detailed labels stitched on to each item. Fashion may be a toy, but it’s a damn fine one.
Accessories (and sweets!) on show in October.
Love the sunrise cardigan.
Of course the stand-out gimmick (if that’s what I can call it) is the amazing 3D printed fabric – you’ll need a pair of those ubiquitous 3D glasses to get the full effect, but I think it’s pretty great nonetheless. It almost feels like a perfect example of what people think of immediately when you mention Japanese fashion: innovation. I’m not sure if any other designers have done something similar (a quick search didn’t get me very far), but I hope we’ll be seeing more of this in the future – it’s perfect for budding pop stars.
Even tiny monsters get in on the action!
And finally… probably one of my favourite accessories ever!
