I have to say that before this season’s collection came out, I hadn’t really paid that much attention to Spiral Girl – more fool me, take a look at these great images from the catalogue:
Spiral Girl have succeeded in ticking many trend boxes – military, sheepskin, fur, nordic – as have many other fashion brands, but what makes Spiral Girl’s latest offerings stand out to me are the splashes of red. I love the red boots and bag, they really stand out with against the neutral greys and olives without looking overly trashy in comparison. I also really like the style paired with the slash of red lip stick on the model’s lips, and this is a stand-out look.
Red lipstick is an absolute fashion classic, and has seen something of a revival in recent years along with ‘vintage’ style make-up – winged eyeliner and set hair for example. Red is an incredibly bold colour, and you need to have a bit of confidence to carry it off! I personally am a huge fan of red lipstick and wore it most days last winter, and indeed I do feel it’s more of a winter colour for me – this summer I’ve really enjoyed wearing bright candy pink lipstick with pale denim and floral prints. My old stand-by lip colour, as favoured by many a gyaru, is more of a nude shade. However, although nude is still considered the predominant lip colour in gyaru fashion (long gone are the days of shockingly white-lipped ganguro!), red lips are showing up more often in magazine spreads and fashion photoshoots – see September’s Blenda magazine for more examples. I’m totally backing this trend – I love the contrast between smoky gyaru eye make-up and dashingly bold lips, and I think it’s a colour that really compliments this seasons trends that can border on masculine – contrast butch oversized aviator sheepskin jackets with red lips and over-knee socks for a modern take on a classic look. I’m not sure how many will take on red lips, and I don’t think it’ll ever overtake popular nude shades, but let’s hear it for red lipstick! Just remember to blot, and go for a long-lasting formula…
