My first introduction to Super Lovers came as a young teen – trotting around London I came across the (now defunct) Covent Garden store and was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant colours and motifs that were so unlike anything that was on offer on the highstreet.
Flash forward a decade, and the London Super Lovers store is sadly no longer with us, but the spirit of Super Lovers is still alive & well and producing some of the most iconic Harajuku neo-punk fashion around!
In the above image, I chose to focus on items that feature a monotone colour scheme – as much as I adore the lurid neon colours that Super Lovers do so well, by showcasing more toned-down clothing it allows for the design and prints to shine without distraction.
I’m really taken with the newspaper jacket – if this was in my wardrobe I’d pair it with black peg-leg trousers and some wickedly high wedges for an edgy take on business chic! I’ve been talking a lot about leopard print this season; the black & white jacket is a great way to show that leopard isn’t just for gyaru – embrace the trend, whatever your style. I love the ‘lovers rock’ t-shirt with dripping skull; a Super Lovers classic! As well as the great tailoring seen on the jacket, Super Lovers also produce some more ‘out-there’ items, such as the amazing pvc MC Hammer style harem pants – you’ve got to love the confidence in just getting these produced even if they’re not your taste… look out for the matching jacket too!
Finally, I’ve got to mention the neon green & pink leopard jumper… now there’s combination! I think the ‘new wave punk’ slogan perfectly encapsulates the Super Lovers brand image – this is the new punk, Japan style!
