“I hope roomsLINK, through its collaboration with brands, stores, media and the entire fashion industry, will act as a catalyst to vitalize ‘TOKYO’” – Tomonori Matsui, roomsLINK director.

Walking into the impressively huge Yoyogi National Stadium 1st Gymnasium, you could be forgiven for thinking you were attending a concert by one of Japan’s legendary pop groups, such was the air of excitement. However, a closer look at the young people milling around inside the venue revealed that this was no ordinary day out for the Japanese fashionistas. From designers to models, press to stylists, the buzz surrounding roomsLINK was practically deafening. We [...]

Having covered some of our favorite shows at the 11th Japan Fashion Week, we thought it was about time we got round to uniting some of our impressions and opinions of it as a whole and also how it will influence us here at Tokyo Telephone this coming year.

Continue reading for an impressive amount of looks from the show, quotes and completely personal opinion.

We’re not normally ones for speculation here at Tokyo Telephone… but we love a good urban legend! The imaginings of a highly-strung mind, or is there a wee kernel of truth in there?

A while ago, the majority of The Internet’s curiosity was piqued by this article from the Japan Times about Shun Akiba’s book outlining his theories relating to tunnels under Tokyo. His quest started from the find of an old Tokyo subway map that clearly showed two lines parallel to one another… however, on modern maps they are shown crossing each other. Why such a major difference? What followed was a major undertaking for Akiba; combing construction plans [...]

This year saw, apparently, a boom in ‘agejo’ fashion style among the young women of Tokyo. Whether this boom had more to do with an uptake in trending items such as coloured contact lenses, maxi dresses and ever-increasing long fake eyelashes rather than the emulation of popular agejo models Momoka Eri (Momoeri) and Sakurai Rina (Sakurina)… well, we’ll see. Either way, I’m sure we can all appreciate the flawless style of a rather interesting breed of woman.

A few days ago, Samuel and I finally got around to watching Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から)- Seeing as it was released a whole eight years go, I’m not sure why it took us this long, but it really was worth the wait.

Dark Water centres around a divorced mother (Hitomi Kuroki as Yoshimi Matsubara) and her daughter who move in to a rather run-down apartment building. Soon after they settle in, a mysterious damp patch appears, and water begins dripping from the ceiling. Alongside painful divorce proceeding, custody battles and job worries, a child’s red bag keeps mysteriously appearing in odd places and bringing with it memories [...]

Tokyo Telephone were representing over at the brilliant Hyper Japan 2010 this weekend. Barely a stone’s throw from the Japan Matsuri, the venue in Brick Lane was an inspired choice, although given that the event was over-capacity within about 30 seconds of the doors opening, they clearly would have benefited from a slightly larger one! Luckily the huddled masses lined up outside were not treated to grim London rain before entering, and you could not say that it was not worth the wait. The first thing that struck me as we made our way around was that with a very small number of exceptions, this was the first event [...]

Tattoos and fashion have long been somewhat uncomfortable bedfellows – while both are methods of adornment and have enjoyed similar stigma as well as status over history their clientèle have largely been rather disparate.  However while the punks, rockers and bikers were out in force at this weekends London Tattoo Convention 2010, they were joined by plenty who could have stumbled straight out of the pages of Dazed and Confused, the new wave of vintage loving Rockabilly and for want of a better word - civilians – straight of the high-street.  It was the kind of inclusiveness that the team here at Tokyo Telephone love London for which made it the perfect location for such an international gathering of guests [...]

The Tokyo Telephone team were out in force this weekend at the Japan Matsuri 2010 in London’s famous Spitalfields Market.  The last UK event we covered was Akemi Solloway’s Japanese Art Festival – coverage here & here – however the Matsuri had a completely different vibe and captured something very different from the average Japan focused convention diet of anime, manga and fashion subcultures – while they were also well represented, it was the spirit of Matsuri that took center stage – the sounds, music, food and most importantly atmosphere that could only be Japanese.  Hopefully we have managed to capture a degree of that in our extensive photo gallery after the [...]

Here’s the third & final part of our vintage shopping guides (be sure to also take a gander at parts one and two!):

I have two approaches to vintage shopping: either I go out with a really specific item in mind (eg, little black dress, denim jacket, leather bag) and concentrate on just that; or I have a rummage and let the item find me! If you’re a vintage lover, do you have a strategy for making the most of used-clothing shops?

Here’s part two of the vintage shopping guide:

I happened to be leafing through a copy of Used Jelly magazine (Jelly magazine’s offering to the vintage-loving fashionistas) the other day, when I saw they’d created the most awesome vintage shopping guides for Osaka, Daikanyama, Nakameguro, Harajuku and Shibuya. After much trial & error, I put on my 日本語 hat (with a little help from Samuel!) and decided to reproduce them here so non-Japanese speakers/readers could find them useful too!

First up are Daikanyama & Nakameguro:

Mother Lip; Good for: remade items, tops

Daikanyama Roshe; (http://roshe.jp) Good for: accessories, [...]

Cosplayers, culture and cuteness galore! As mentioned in our tour post, Samuel & I were fortunate enough to attend the Japanese Art Festival in London this past weekend – we had a great time and can’t wait to see some of the lovely people that we met again soon!

One of the highlights of the event was the Kawaii Culture panel hosted by Akemi Solloway & 6%Dokidoki. 6%Dokidoki are currently in the middle of a world tour; to celebrate their 15th birthday, Sebastian Masuda and his crew of glittering rainbow-festooned girls are travelling from Harajuku to London, Paris, LA and San Francisco to spread [...]
