furifu – Reimagining Wafuku

Whenever I talk about kimono and other forms of traditional Japanese clothing on Tokyo Telephone I always feel the need to reiterate the fact that I’m no expert in this beautiful and often confusing field: I’m a fair-weather kimono fancier, a window-shopper and a dreamer. So let me say it one more time: I’m just dipping my toe into the wonderful world of wafuku, and there plenty of other people out there who know a whole more about it than I do… however if we’re talking about the social significance of Comme des Garcons, that’s another story!

I think I’ve already said this before, but I’ll say it again: despite my terrifying love of Japanese fashion, what I know about kimono could probably fit on the back of a postage stamp. However, I am a huge fan of the visuals, and my clumsy attempts to think about kimono in depth (maple leaves – autumn, maybe?) just leave me wanting to explore this intricate world with its levels of meanings.

What do hime gyaru, agejo and kimono have in common? (Well, Japan, obviously…) A sense of the dramatic, perhaps? Maybe it was the bright colours that attracted me to this mook (magazine-book/special edition) in the first place, but boy am I glad I picked up Kimono Ageha! It’s utterly fantastic.
