Scramble Market, a corner boutique in La Foret, is probably one of our favourite places in Tokyo… I know we say that a lot, but the depth and breadth of fashion in Tokyo is quite breath-taking and the result is that we have more than a dozen ‘favourite’ places!

I’m still in love with La Foret; I still get goosebumps when I step in through the huge glass doors and walk around and up and down and amuse myself on the tiny escalators. La Foret was the goal when I was a teenager: a huge fashion department store in Harajuku selling all of the Japanese street [...]

For this spring and summer RNA have decided to look back at everybody’s favourite era, and put a little rock and roll back into Tokyo fashion again! I really love this style, and it seems I’m not the only one: GVGV’s 2012 collection also featured a heft amount of rockabilly-influenced clothing – however, while GVGV featured high-end peplums and tailoring, RNA’s “nutty rockabilly girl” is a little more relaxed. This collection centres around tight trousers, boots, wingtips, flared skirts and bold prints that are sure to set retro hearts fluttering.

I guess that at this point I should confess that I really don’t [...]

monomania 2012

On February 6, 2012 By

It’s been a wee while since I last featured Monomania here on Tokyo Telephone, but I think it’s high time we took another look at this youthful street fashion brand again. I was a little surprised to see that Monomania had arguably the longest line for the cash register during La Foret’s post-New Year sale; the queue stretched right around the floor and was no doubt helped by all items being priced at under Y1000! Nonetheless, it seemed that Monomania’s fans were out in force that day, and since then I’ve been seeing a lot more from Monomania popping up on the streets of Tokyo.

Gomme Winter Collection 2012

On February 1, 2012 By

(It has taken more than a small amount of self-control not to title this something like “Gomme with the Wind“.  Please appreciate it.)

Gomme is one of those shops that I always walk past and then really regret and have to backtrack and have a good old mooch around inside, and with concessions in both Harajuku’s La Foret and Shibuya’s Parco that’s quite a lot of backtracking…

I think what I really like about Gomme is how natural the style feels. There’s quite a strong image of this kind of inherent style that will always be part of Japanese fashion: oversize outers, cropped [...]

Remain Silent is a relatively new brand, and my first contact was when their catalogue was thrust into my hands along with the words “it’s a bit like Comme des Garcons!” – how on earth could I resist?

Although Comme des Garcons comparisons are rarely on the mark (how could anyone but Rei Kawakubo envision such a consistently unique outcome?), but in this I think it’s pretty well justified as half of the creative partnership behind Remain Silent (Kenji Takenouchi and Satoshi Ishihara) worked as a pattern-maker for CdG – Takenouchi now brings his vision to his own brand, and of course us [...]

So – who wants some colour? As always, I feel like there’s an out-of-sync feeling feeling between fashion season and the reality of the current weather, and as I’m excitedly pawing through the autumn winter 2012 Paris collections, here in Japan fashion is gearing up for spring and summer. I can’t wait to start taking ridiculous photos in cherry blossom season, but I will miss crazy amounts of layering when the temperature starts to heat up.

Talking of all things hot hot hot, here’s RBT X CO! Having been on the scene for three years now, and currently stocked in Chelsea at La [...]

The face that Japanese fashion presents to the world may have long slipped from the vision of CDG and Yohji and into the realms of bright pop-culture infused saturation, but the substance beyond the surface has always been pleasantly steady.  Just behind the fashion that asks for your attention and begs to be street snapped, Japanese fashion at its purest is actually very refined, understated and a celebration of design over shock value.  It must be disappointing for those expecting the streets of Tokyo to be non-stop Dog, teaming with Sweet Lolitas or else an artists impression of the inside of Lady Gaga’s mind, but as I have long [...]

Yes, just a few weeks after I last talked about Jouetie, here we are again – new season, new year, new collection!

For spring & summer 2012, Jouetie, and producers Ami & Aya, have gone with a ‘bad angel’ theme; romantic-girly meets street-punk, with a bit of a Union Jack print and some ankle socks thrown in for good measure. I think that overall, this offering from Jouetie shows that they’re pretty well in touch with their customer base – this is one of the more ShibuHara brands from Mark-Styler, with the emphasis on the Hara- in this case. I don’t know about [...]

Happy New Year for many people in Tokyo means one thing: happy new clothes!

Yes, sale season is upon us, and all over the city men and women are lining up for hours to grab a bargain or two. Shibuya’s iconic 109 department store opened at an eye-watering 6.45am yesterday as the queues outside the building were already getting out of hand, and you can bet that by 7am clusters of girls were already swapping items from the brands’ lucky packs (fukubukuro 福袋) that weren’t quite to taste.

Tokyo Telephone popped along to snap a few photos in both Shibuya and Harajuku, and we [...]

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think I’ve mentioned Jouetie here before, right? Jouetie is yet another Mark-Styler brand (the company behind Emoda, Murua, Dazzlin, etc), “produced” by Ami and Aya who have an insanely cute blog. As far as I’m aware, it’s the only M-S brand to be located in La Foret, rather than the usual 109/Lumine/Alta department stores, but that goes to show the strength of Jouetie’s brand image.

It’s a bit of a shame it’s taken me this long to get around to talking about Jouetie, as I always make sure to swing by whenever I’m trotting [...]

The obscenely talented creative force that is Justin Davis has not been resting on his laurels in the run-up to Christmas, but has instead managed to find the time to come up with a completely original capsule collection specifically for the season.  It is mostly a continuation of the collection that I talked about relatively recently here and there is the usual amount of precise enamel work, Cartier quality settings and artistic vision of a man who has spent a good amount of his formative creative years in the company of Andy Warhol.

The early highlight of the collection for me [...]

It kind of feels like it hasn’t been that long since I last featured Black Triangle Design, but here we are again – the Black Triangle is back with another fantastic jewellery collection that I’m itching to get my hands on!

(Sidenote: ‘triangle’ seems to be one of those words that I really have trouble typing; if you spot any ‘traingle‘s please let me know!)

Last time I talked about triangles and symbolism, and even though you’re not likely to catch me with crystals and patchouli incense, I’m catching a touch of spirituality here in this look book. Maybe it’s the [...]
