I was reading through my introduction to Itazura when it dawned on me that I hadn’t included half of my favorite items from the shop, so here we go again! Needless to say, I would highly advise you to read the original post before you begin so you get an idea of the new kind of Japanese vintage fashion that this place focuses on, as otherwise this might just look like a random aggregation of culture, but trust me, there is method to this particular madness.
This is how the place appears from the doorway in, and you have to virtually crawl [...]

We have been discussing the influence of Akihabara culture on fashion quite recently on Tokyo Telephone. It all began with the Akihabara Fashion Week, then a look into 5okai, the shop that is leading the way in the future of Akihabara fashion, but if that represents where we are going, where are we right now in terms of Japanese fashion with Akihabara influences? The answer came to me rather abruptly on our travels in Shibuya when we were quite literally grabbed and taken into a new vintage shop that has just opened this month in the same building as Wagado in Shibuya.
As the [...]
CLICK TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE →With a collection title that reads like bad SEO tagging and more pastel colours, frills and lace than you can shake a stick at, it can only mean one thing: Liz Lisa’s 2012 spring collection is here!
Eagle-eyed Tokyo based readers will have probably noticed select pieces popping up in stores already, but today I’m happy to be able to showcase the full collection in both catalogue and look-book form. (If anyone can shed light on what on earth ‘pasterine’ is when it’s at home, please do tell!) Although Liz Lisa is probably about as far away from my personal style as a bin bag (maybe [...]
CLICK TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE →Late last year Liz Lisa debuted a new brand, Juge Etta… and we’ve only just got around to mentioning it here, sorry about that! I think Fashion Week takes up rather a lot of our time at Tokyo Telephone, and also we’re exploring a really exciting new wave of Akihabara fashion. However, let’s not forget that there’s more to Japanese fashion than underground brands and new-wave styles – as Samuel wrote about before (over a year ago!!), the mainstream is pretty damn fine: nowhere else can you find such quality and downright lovely fashion even at the very base level. Yes, Japanese fashion undoubtedly has its peaks, [...]
CLICK TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE →Whenever I talk about kimono and other forms of traditional Japanese clothing on Tokyo Telephone I always feel the need to reiterate the fact that I’m no expert in this beautiful and often confusing field: I’m a fair-weather kimono fancier, a window-shopper and a dreamer. So let me say it one more time: I’m just dipping my toe into the wonderful world of wafuku, and there plenty of other people out there who know a whole more about it than I do… however if we’re talking about the social significance of Comme des Garcons, that’s another story!
Right, disclaimer out of the way, today I wanted to [...]

For this spring and summer RNA have decided to look back at everybody’s favourite era, and put a little rock and roll back into Tokyo fashion again! I really love this style, and it seems I’m not the only one: GVGV’s 2012 collection also featured a heft amount of rockabilly-influenced clothing – however, while GVGV featured high-end peplums and tailoring, RNA’s “nutty rockabilly girl” is a little more relaxed. This collection centres around tight trousers, boots, wingtips, flared skirts and bold prints that are sure to set retro hearts fluttering.
I guess that at this point I should confess that I really don’t [...]

In a continuation of this menswear kick I have been on recently (last roundup here), I thought I would showcase another collection that has just hit the shops in Tokyo. Now I do have an excuse for not getting this out sooner as Diet Butcher Slim Skin don’t really push their stuff out to the press until it is pretty much imminently available to buy, but compensate instead with a steady stream of special editions, collaborations and mini-collections throughout the year that ensures that they are never too far from magazine coverage. Anyway, the core S/S 2012 collection was recently previewed in Isetan Mens in Shinjuku, with an [...]

(It has taken more than a small amount of self-control not to title this something like “Gomme with the Wind“. Please appreciate it.)
Gomme is one of those shops that I always walk past and then really regret and have to backtrack and have a good old mooch around inside, and with concessions in both Harajuku’s La Foret and Shibuya’s Parco that’s quite a lot of backtracking…
I think what I really like about Gomme is how natural the style feels. There’s quite a strong image of this kind of inherent style that will always be part of Japanese fashion: oversize outers, cropped [...]
CLICK TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE →Eagle-eyed followers of Tokyo Telephone on twitter and tumblr might have noticed a recent photo I popped online of exciting new magazine .Ruby from the creators of Fruits, Street and Tune. More than a few people have asked what .Ruby is all about, so as soon as it was released I dashed down to our local bookshop (alas, not the secondhand one we live above) and picked up a copy of the very first issue.
According to Aoki Shoichi (he of the world-famous and highly influential Fruits street fashion photography magazine – I don’t need to go into detail, do I?), .Ruby [...]

Yes, just a few weeks after I last talked about Jouetie, here we are again – new season, new year, new collection!
For spring & summer 2012, Jouetie, and producers Ami & Aya, have gone with a ‘bad angel’ theme; romantic-girly meets street-punk, with a bit of a Union Jack print and some ankle socks thrown in for good measure. I think that overall, this offering from Jouetie shows that they’re pretty well in touch with their customer base – this is one of the more ShibuHara brands from Mark-Styler, with the emphasis on the Hara- in this case. I don’t know about [...]

TELLSIT (or occasionally “Tells It”) is a rising star of the Japanese street fashion world whose first presentation at Tokyo Fashion Week has propelled this young brand into the spotlight, apt considering that their, admittedly rather small at 20 items, collection reads like an A-Z of current and incoming trends in street style.
Firstly the collection is completely un-gendered and unisex without ending up in the over-sized and baggy territory that so many brands do. Instead, it is parked firmly in neutrality, which if anything, accentuates the gender of the person who does choose to wear it – in this lookbook’s case, a woman.
On [...]

Yes, sale season is upon us, and all over the city men and women are lining up for hours to grab a bargain or two. Shibuya’s iconic 109 department store opened at an eye-watering 6.45am yesterday as the queues outside the building were already getting out of hand, and you can bet that by 7am clusters of girls were already swapping items from the brands’ lucky packs (fukubukuro 福袋) that weren’t quite to taste.
Tokyo Telephone popped along to snap a few photos in both Shibuya and Harajuku, and we [...]
